Inpatient Treatment – Places to Get Around-the-Clock Care

When seeking help for mental health issues, you should first talk with your doctor or a counselor, if you have one. Either of those people might be able to help you find the right help. If you don’t have a doctor or counselor, or you need more help than they can provide, call your Local Mental Health Authority (LMHA). The LMHA in your area can help connect you with the services you need. That help might be in the form of a 24 / 7 crisis call center or other crisis support services in your area that might prevent or reduce the need for more intensive care.

Local Mental Health Authority:

There are Local Mental Health Authorities (LMHAs) that serve every county in Texas. LMHAs provide a variety of mental health services and supports, including outpatient mental health services that are priced based on your ability to pay. LMHAs provide these services through contracts with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Services might include counseling or therapy; help finding a place to live, or other basic needs that are affecting a person’s mental health. In addition, each LMHA provides a 24-hour crisis hotline and other crisis services to help those that have mental health issues that need immediate attention. In some cases, a crisis may require inpatient treatment at a public or private hospital. Your LMHA may be able to help you get access to that type of inpatient treatment, or, they might offer a safe place for a person to stay, which might help address the problem that created the crisis. Public Psychiatric Hospitals:

These hospitals serve to stabilize people dealing with psychiatric illness and return them to their homes. They provide care for many people who only have Medicaid coverage or don’t have health insurance. Services include psychiatric assessment, evaluation, and treatment. Some of these hospitals are designed to help with very specific needs. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) manages the state hospitals.

Private Psychiatric Hospitals:

There are several private hospitals that people with mental health issues might be able to access. To learn more about where these hospitals are located, select the link below:
